Astrometry and Relativity

چکیده
— General relativistic effects in astrophyiscal systems have been detected thanks to accurate astrometric measurements. We outline some keystones of astrometry such as stellar aberration (argument development during the years 1727-1872); Mercury’s perihelion precession (1845-1916); solar disk oblateness (19662001); relativistic light deflection (1916-1919); lunar geodetic precession (1916-1988); Lense-Thirring and Pugh-Schiff precessions (1917-1959), finally presenting the issue of the quest for a guide star for GP-B satellite (1974-2004) as application of all previous topics.

Laser Astrometric Test of Relativity: Science, Technology, and Mission Design
The Laser Astrometric Test of Relativity (LATOR) experiment is designed to explore general theory of relativity in the close proximity to the Sun – the most intense gravitational environment in the solar system. Using independent time-series of highly accurate measurements of the Shapiro time-delay (interplanetary laser ranging accurate to 3 mm at ∼2AU) and interferometric astrometry (accurate ...
متن کاملPrecision VLBI astrometry: Instrumentation, algorithms and pulsar parallax determination
This thesis describes the development of DiFX, the first general–purpose software correlator for radio interferometry, and its use with the Australian Long Baseline Array to complete the largest Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) pulsar astrometry program undertaken to date in the Southern Hemisphere. This two year astrometry program has resulted in the measurement of seven new pulsar par...
متن کاملTesting general relativity by micro-arcsecond global astrometry
The global astrometric observations of a GAIA-like satellite were modeled within the PPN formulation of Post-Newtonian gravitation. An extensive experimental campaign based on realistic end-to-end simulations was conducted to establish the sensitivity of global astrometry to the PPN parameter γ, which measures the amount of space curvature produced by unit rest mass. The results show that, with...
متن کاملProspects of Dynamical Determination of General Relativity Parameter β and Solar Quadrupole Moment J2⊙ with Asteroid Radar Astronomy
We evaluated the prospects of quantifying the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter β and solar quadrupole moment J2 with observations of near-Earth asteroids with large orbital precession rates (9 to 27 arcsec century). We considered existing optical and radar astrometry, as well as radar astrometry that can realistically be obtained with the Arecibo planetary radar in the next five years. O...
متن کاملOptical Astrometry of Accreting Black Holes and Neutron Stars: Scientific Opportunities
The extreme conditions found near black holes and neutron stars provide a unique opportunity for testing physical theories. Observations of both types of compact objects can be used to probe regions of strong gravity, allowing for tests of General Relativity. Furthermore, a determination of the properties of matter at the remarkably high densities that exist within neutron stars would have impo...
